Watermelons are a summer staple, but not all of them are as healthy as they look. With growing concerns about food adulteration, it’s important to check whether your watermelon has been tampered with using harmful dyes or chemicals. One of the easiest home tests is the cloth test: take a piece of watermelon and rub it on a white cotton cloth. If it leaves a pinkish or reddish stain, it could be laced with artificial coloring. Another easy trick is the water test—simply crush a bit of the watermelom in a glass of water. If the water changes color, especially turning red, that's a sign of added synthetic dye, which can be harmful when consumed regularly.

Apart from these tests, visual cues matter too. Be cautious of watermelons that look unnaturally bright, glossy, or have an intense red flesh that seems too good to be true. Natural watermelon flesh is juicy and red or pink in color, but not fluorescent. You'll notice a faint grainy texture along with a light, sweet aroma that's naturally inviting. Overly perfect-looking fruits might be chemically ripened or injected with substances to enhance their appearance. To stay safe, buy from trusted sellers and when possible, go for organic or locally sourced options. Your summer fruit cravings should be refreshing—not risky.
