Liverpool Summer Fix: Who Stays and Who Should Go?
Liverpool

With the Jurgen Klopp era drawing to a close and Arne Slot set to take charge, Liverpool enter one of their most important summers in recent memory. The question on every fan’s mind: who should stay, and who should go? While the core of the team remains strong, several players may be nearing the end of their journey at Anfield. Joel Matip and Thiago Alcântara, both injury-prone and on expiring contracts, are expected to depart. Similarly, questions loom over the long-term futures of players like Joe Gomez, Kostas Tsimikas, and even Darwin Núñez, who continues to divide opinion with his unpredictable form. On the "keep" list, Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Alexis Mac Allister remain essential to the club’s spine. The biggest challenge, however, lies in reshaping the midfield depth and reinforcing both full-back positions, especially with the heavy demands of a new tactical setup under Slot.

Beyond player decisions, Liverpool must also address deeper structural issues that have plagued their performances in recent seasons. The club has struggled with consistency, especially against lower-ranked teams, which has cost them valuable points in tight title races. Their midfield revamp from 2023–24 showed potential but remains incomplete, as they still lack the perfect balance of dynamism, creativity, and defensive stability. A key area of focus for this summer should be strengthening the midfield further, with at least one marquee signing who can add both grit and vision to the center of the park. In addition to midfield reinforcements, their defensive setup needs attention, particularly with full-backs pushing high up the field, leaving gaps that opponents have exploited. The full-back positions, a hallmark of Klopp’s system, require depth and versatility, while the center-back pairing needs to ensure they remain solid and adaptable to various tactical setups. Recruitment this summer has to focus on not just marquee signings but younger depth players and leaders who can seamlessly transition into the new tactical vision of Arne Slot. Whether it’s securing a clinical striker to offer an alternative to Mohamed Salah or bringing in a defensive powerhouse to shield the backline, Liverpool cannot afford to stand still.
